SELF-COMPASSION FOR LAWYERS

Wellness for Lawyers, Designed by a Lawyer

“I’ve been in the legal environment for quite a while.

What I have noticed is that while incredibly driven, lawyers are some of the most self-critical people I've ever met. High levels of self-criticism are associated with depression, anxiety, and burnout. I've seen it. I've felt it.

To fill this tremendous need, I founded Self-Compassion for Lawyers to share the solution."

B.A. Harvard University in Romance Languages and Literatures

Stanford Medical School Certification in the neuroscience, philosophy, and pedagogy of compassion

MTS, Harvard Divinity School, Buddhist Studies

J.D., Harvard Law School, Dean's Scholar Prize

Summer Intern at NY Attorney General's Office

Research Assistant to Judge David Barron and former Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow

Former Associate at Sidley Austin LLP
Elizabeth, JD, MTS is a lawyer and workshop facilitator who holds three Harvard degrees, speaks five languages, has a neuroscience background, and works in a top law firm. She has found that certain practices greatly help her thrive in a legal career. She shares these techniques by offering self-compassion, mindfulness, and resilience programs through her organization, Self-Compassion for Lawyers.

Elizabeth has work experience at Sidley Austin, the New York Attorney General’s Office, the Global Justice Center, Click Therapeutics, the United Nations, RAI International, and the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE).

For the past decade, she has been designing practice-based and science-integrated programs for the most successful and effective lawyers in the world, leveraging ancient wisdom from many ages and cultures in order to apply them to a modern, legal setting. She also teaches for the general public through www.happinesssangha.com.

Elizabeth has presented to over 10,000 people in the last decade. She has offered workshops for the judges in both the Eastern District of New York and the New York State Supreme Court. She has taught through the New York City Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. She has presented at top law firms including Quinn Emanuel, Baker McKenzie, Perkins Coie, and Vinson & Elkins. She has taught mindfulness, compassion, and self-compassion at Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School, and Stanford University. She serves on the Committee for Mindfulness and Well-being of the New York City Bar Association.

Elizabeth combines what she learned about ritual and meaning at Harvard Divinity School, her literature degree from Harvard College, her experience as a big law attorney, and her time studying with the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Jon Kabat-Zinn to think outside the box and address modern challenges. She uses her unique and diverse background as a platform to create transformation in organizations and in people's lives.

Spreading these practices to other lawyers is the biggest privilege of her life.
